Utilizing Social Media to Help a Library's Popularity

Social media can help gain popularity and traction for a person or business and it can most definitely help libraries do the same. It can help promote a libraire's services and programs, plus gain news patron's for the library as well. I think libraires can benefit a lot when incorporating social media but it's not just making accounts and posting. There needs to be a strategic social networking strategy to get a more efficient and better result.

I've discovered a studied article titled, "How Academic Libraries Can Leverage Social Networking to Popularize Their Services: An Empirical Study", that gives a detailed insight and study on how social networking a library can help and the most effective way to do so. An example of their study is what social media site works best for libraires specifically. Facebook came on top with Youtube coming in second. "we find that Facebook not only enjoyed the maximum number of members among survey participants but also was the most frequently used by them (135)". Although social media can be used as a benefit as well, the study shows that it shouldn't be a priority because there are other ways of networking as well. Libraries preferably lean toward emails and flyers to get their message across with social media being 3rd behind, according to Table 5 on page 137 of the article.
