How Libraires can save Communal Infrastructures and Social Spaces

From cafes to public parks, these are popular destinations where people gather and socialized. Although some overlook another, the library. Libraries can be a great place to gather, share thoughts, and more. When we think of libraries in terms of social hubs, it's usually just study groups but it can be such more than that. Libraries can be utilized to enhance the space for a more better social infrastructure with a deeper mission for the public. I think overall majority of public libraries are one of those place that strive to improve their community through programs and special events as well as keep a continued social society in a world of digital screens and less one on one communication.

In this article, South Korea is doing just that and is making sure it's taking advantage of what libraries can do as social hubs and quality of life for their citizens. The problem that South Korea faced was the increase of housing development. From high rise apartment complexes to low rise urban houses, these residential developments was overtaking communal infrastructures. "They often lack communal infrastructure even as housing density continues to increase (Ha [15]). According to Ha ([15]), long-term residents of these deteriorating or substandard housing areas typically possess a sense of kinship, which highlights the importance of preserving social and cultural capital in those areas." As a combat to this situation, south Korea has used small scale libraires to intertwine with the heavy dense residential area. This allowed a more improved communal infrastructure.
