Libraries and the benefits of Social Networking

By Megan Cook

We know just how effective social networking is in promoting the use of establishments, and what platforms to use; but how do we create interest in someone wanting to go to a library? There have been many methods introduced, one I found the most interesting was “ book influencers”  through the use of  “the Bookernet” which is a term for the online presence for those who are enthusiastic about literature. (Szabó, D., & Dani, E. (2024) This gives people an opportunity to create personalized experiences and share their love of books with others.

I believe through the method of “ book influencers” will create a space that would encourage patrons to visit libraries more often. Connections via social media platforms in an informal environment is key to encouraging people into visiting libraries. A lot of people feel intimidated by going into a library to check out reading materials or use of the facility in general due to feeling like they don’t exactly belong in the environment. With the use of "book influencers" they can create a more casual and personalized environment that a library worker might not necessarily be able to create, due to the fact that they work there.

Specifically using video content such as a video blog or tiktok. “Come with me to my local library” or “my top ten must reads” creates the environment that would capture the eye of a patron. More libraries should collaborate with local "book influencers", while also working with traditional social media methods. I will add another link from the ALA that includes other various tools and guides that are helpful with creating innovative platforms for social networking.
