How come Libraries function as Social Hubs?

A social hub is a location or a public area that many people congregate in order to socialize and spend time there. As someone who visited quite a few and interns at one, libraries are very much social hubs.

From Experience

From experience, libraries themselves act as social hubs, especially as they tend to offer calm and quiet spaces that many people may need to get away from the busy of life or to seek resources that may be hard to find elsewhere. A major aspect of libraries as a social hub is the offering of the calm and quiet, along with it being for people of all ages and backgrounds. This allows many people to feel welcome within the space, and gives access to many people to enjoy the library as a social hub beyond what is the norm. Families are able to access a space where they are able to bring their children, children can enjoy a calm yet fun environment, and many others are given different opportunities from visiting the library.

Another reason I insist that libraries are social hubs is due to the fact we tend to give back to the community we visit. Public libraries do this even more so, as they tend to hold onto historical records regarding their city or town they are in, along with having a deeper understanding of the local population to know what they need from the library. Events being a major factor, libraries use these to help draw in potential patrons, but also to help the community as a whole, allowing people to socialize in a space without judgement and in an atmosphere that encourages socialization in a calm manner. This can allow for those who are more reserved, or looking for a calmer lifestyle with people who share similar thoughts, to come together to form relationships that benefit them all.
